When should I see a podiatrist?

You should see a podiatrist if you're experiencing any foot or ankle pain that lasts more than a few days, have difficulty walking, notice changes in your feet like discoloration or swelling, or have recurring issues like ingrown toenails or heel pain. If you have diabetes, regular podiatry visits are important even without symptoms, as foot problems can develop quickly. Don't wait until the pain becomes unbearable, early treatment often means faster recovery.

What's the difference between a podiatrist and an orthopedic doctor?

A podiatrist specializes exclusively in feet, ankles, and lower legs, completing specialized training focused on these areas. An orthopedic doctor treats the entire musculoskeletal system, including bones and joints throughout your body. For foot and ankle issues, podiatrists often have more focused expertise in conditions like bunions, plantar fasciitis, and diabetic foot care. Both are qualified doctors, and sometimes they work together for complex cases.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?

This depends on your insurance plan. Many insurance plans allow you to see a podiatrist without a referral, but some HMO plans require one from your primary care doctor. We recommend calling your insurance company or our office before your visit, we're happy to help you verify your coverage and what's needed.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, a list of any medications you're taking, and any relevant medical records if you have them. Wear or bring the shoes you wear most often, especially if they're related to your foot problem. If you have X-rays or test results from another doctor, bring those too. Arrive about 10 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.

Are custom orthotics worth it, or can I just buy inserts from the store?

Custom orthotics are made specifically for your feet based on molds or scans, addressing your unique foot structure and specific problems. Over-the-counter inserts can provide basic cushioning and may help mild discomfort, but they're not tailored to your needs. If you have ongoing pain, structural issues like flat feet or high arches, or conditions like plantar fasciitis, custom orthotics are usually much more effective. We'll evaluate your situation and recommend the best option for you.

Will my visit be painful?

Most podiatry examinations are not painful. Your podiatrist will examine your feet, watch you walk, and may press on certain areas to identify problem spots, which might cause brief discomfort if that area is already sore. If you need a procedure like treating an ingrown toenail or removing a wart, we use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. We'll always explain what we're doing and make sure you're as comfortable as possible throughout your visit.
